The 3rd Annual Montrose Crawl benefits the Houston Area Women’s Center. HAWC's vision, leadership, and action empower women to advance their roles, rights and well being. HAWC provides shelter and support services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. HAWC serves people without regard to age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, color or ability. HAWC also educates and informs children, youth and the community at large to prevent and eliminate the causes of domestic and sexual violence.
The HAWC has been a member of the Houston community since 1977 and part of the United Way family since 1981. Over the years, it has grown from a grassroots effort run by volunteers to an organization employing over 120 staff. Volunteers continue to make the HAWC who they are by contributing their time, expertise, services and goods to ensure that our agency remains client-focused.
The HAWC directs 88 cents of every dollar towards client services (for more information on program efficiency, visit Charity Navigator). In 2007 alone, donations to the HAWC allowed them to:
- Answer 41,905 calls to their domestic violence and sexual assault crisis hotlines
- Shelter 1,231 women and children from emergency situations
- Counsel 1,352 child witnesses and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault
- Counsel 4,844 adult survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
